Introduction: The Gaming Throne Ascended – ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro’s Odyssey into Unparalleled Gaming Excellence
In the dynamic universe of gaming smartphones, the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro emerges as the undisputed champion, promising an arsenal of features that redefines the very essence of mobile gaming. This comprehensive embarks on an immersive exploration of the ASUS ROG Phone 8 Pro’s full features, unraveling the technological marvels that position it as the apex of gaming prowess.
Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro Design, Software and Gaming
Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro has something different. The Asus ROG gaming phone line always amazes me with its unique style, which traditionally appeals to gamers. However, I was surprised at how mainstream the ROG Phone 8 series became this year.
Gone are the stark whites of the ROG Phone 6 and ROG Phone 7, and in comes a restrained matte black look – understated performance for a mature gaming phone.
Standing at a 6.78-inch display, there’s no top bezel that hid the front-facing camera of the previous ROG Phone 7 — otherwise last seen in 2019 on phones like theSamsung Galaxy S9 and Google Pixel 4. The ROG Phone 8 Pro features the same punch-hole front-facing camera we see on most Android phones.
The Pro model ditches the full-color secondary display on the back of the phone in favor of a more impressive, yet attractive mini-LED display.
The results are reminiscent of the Black Edition of the Nothing Phone 2, the $1,200 (£1,100) starting price we’ve come to expect from this year’s Android flagship, with the gaming chops and specs of previous ROG phones. My particular review unit is the $1,500 version of the ROG Phone 8 Pro, which has a ridiculous 24GB of memory and 1TB of storage.
That maxed-out configuration lets you switch between texting and Grand Theft Auto: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, Dead Cells, and the GeForce Now Free tier for cloud gaming without queuing forever.
The ROG Phone 8 Pro’s display isn’t all that different from other premium Android phones in the line, but once I got used to it, I could tell right away that it’s still a gaming phone. Unlike flagship phones in this price range, the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro has a headphone jack.
It offers two USB-C ports for two different connections or easy charging by holding your device horizontally. Great to have my xbox controller plugged in while charging.
The USB-C port on that side is connected to the Aeroactive Cooler Instead, the ROG Phone 8 Pro has a sealed exterior to achieve IP68 certification to keep out water and dust, and the cooler cools the exterior of the phone. Clipping an accessory to the phone feels like adding a spider to make it even cooler.
If you have the $1,200 model, the accessory costs $100, and the $1,500 model is included.
Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, the Phone 8 Pro does a great job of capturing photos and videos with artificial intelligence processing. It’s still early days for flagship phones with new AI-focused chips, and I’ve found other ways that the Phone 8 Pro makes more subtle use of AI.
These include the ability to perform contextual searches on the device, AI noise cancellation in calls and text recognition within games.
While the Asus ROG Phone 8 Pro might look like any other big black phone at first, the company has added a number of stylish touches to the back, including a new animated mini-LED screen. Asus has printed its Republic of Gamers logo, its “Dare to Win” mantra and the message “Est. 2006” on a pair of Levi’s jeans. The biggest camera hump has three cameras.
But the star of the phone is the stunning Animation Vision mini-LED display on the back. While I’m sad that the full-color secondary display is gone, the new display has a lot of detail that I’d like to see on more phones.
For example, by default, the screen will show the time, your battery level, and the ROG logo. The mini-LED screen displays a camera icon when you’re taking a photo, a music visualizer when you’re listening to music, or custom animations that can be set in the settings.
It’s reminiscent of the LEDs on the back of the Nothing Phone 2, and the smaller screen interprets text and numbers more easily than the Nothing’s abstract light patterns. You can also turn off this screen if you don’t want to flash anything.
On the front, the 6.78-inch display has an optical in-screen fingerprint sensor that can unlock the phone. By default, the screen runs at an adaptive refresh rate of 1 to 120Hz, but you can always run the screen at 165Hz. The screen has a 720Hz touch sample rate – the same as last year’s Phone 7 – and is responsive.
Both features helped when I played Dead Cells,
